LIVE WEBINARS: Critical Bilingual Literacies: From Language Ideologies to Teaching with Translingual Texts

The webinar series begins by guiding participants in applying a critical bilingual literacies approach in their teaching. Participants will also learn ways to design multimodal and translingual lessons to examine language practices and identities. Participants will then explore translanguaging in children's literature and apply a translingual lens in engaging with children's, middle-grade, and young adult literature. This series culminates by supporting participants in applying the En Comunidad reflecting and revising cycle in their pedagogy.

Siempre Bilingüe Virtual Summit Keynote and Workshop

San Antonio Independent School District

Keynote description: In this keynote, Drs. España and Herrera will discuss the urgency of enacting and growing critical bilingual literacies. The keynote will weave threads across inquiries of language ideologies, curriculum, and pedagogy that consider ways we can create spaces for translanguaging across learning spaces and our lives.

Breakout Session Description

In this workshop, Drs. España and Herrera will guide participants in enacting a Temas, Textos, and Translanguaging approach to building community and critical consciousness with bilingual/multilingual students in bilingual and ESL settings. They will also discuss how educators can enact culturally and linguistically sustaining pedagogical approaches using translingual children's, middle-grade, and young adult literature. Attendees will leave with examples of sequences of lessons, texts, and guiding prompts to continue this planning with colleagues.
